Mesquite Smoked Asparagus | Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free

Mesquite Smoked Asparagus One of our favorite restaurants, District Kitchen + Cocktails, serves the most delicious seasonal and locally sourced food.  And so much of it can be made gluten-free.   Right now asparagus is plentiful and in season and of course on their menu.   I love asparagus because it is a detoxifier (glutathione), feeds the gut bacteria (inulin) and contains lots of vitamins and minerals.  But I LOVE the asparagus they serve at District.  They always knock it out of the park.   It is grilled and has this lovely woody smoky flavor.   So of course I had to try it at home.   Usually I just blanch asparagus or throw it in the oven with other roasting veggies near the end....

sweet and spicy cabbage made with ghee, hot sauce and maple syrup

Roasted Sweet & Spicy Cabbage | Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free

Roasted Sweet & Spicy Cabbage This roasted sweet & spicy cabbage has quickly turned into one of our favorite side dishes!   And it is so easy to make you don’t even need a recipe.  Basically, it is just organic cabbage tossed in ghee and your favorite hot sauce, roasted, then drizzled with maple syrup. We like to use a local brand of hot sauce called Yellowbird Jalapeño Sauce but there are so many gluten free spicy sauces you can try!   Franks RedHot, Sriracha, Cholula… Of course, if butter doesn’t bother you then you can substitute that for the ghee (which I use because it doesn’t contain casein). I just cut up the cabbage. Pour melted ghee over the cabbage and then heavily drizzle...

Smoked Cabbage Slaw | Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free

This is an easy copy cat recipe for the smoked cabbage slaw they used to serve at Freedmen’s Bar and Smokehouse.  It is gluten-free and dairy-free, too! Freedmen’s Bar and Smokehouse Update 2019 I’m so sad that Freedmen’s closed down.  I really loved their BBQ and sides and we used to go often and sit on the patio.   I actually used to live down the street when I was an undergrad at UT and my goodness campus has changed!  There are so many more apartments and places to eat and shops for healthy food.  So many more people living on campus now, too. Like I said, we enjoyed sitting on the patio, which had such a nice breeze, as we sipped our favorite cocktail...

Mexican Rice | Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free

Easy Mexican Rice Maybe because I’m half Persian and always have Basmati rice in the pantry, but I just love rice dishes. All kinds of rice dishes from sweet to savory.   My mom used to make this decadent sweet carrot rice for special occasions now we make it more often since it’s a slightly cleaner version. And I just love this restaurant style Tex-Mex rice!  Oh and then there is Cajun bison dirty rice. Another one of our favorite side dishes is this recipe for naturally gluten-free, dairy-free Mexican rice.   You can make it so many different ways and depending on what you have on hand.   It starts with frying white Basmati rice in olive oil, but from there the recipe is really...

Roasted Spiced Potatoes | Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free

Roasted Spiced Potatoes This is one of our favorite side dishes – roasted spiced potatoes!   And if you like roasted potatoes, you’ll love these spiced potato wedge nachos.  A happy accident with chili seasoned potatoes, vegan nacho cheese and pickled jalapeño peppers. These potato wedges are naturally gluten and casein-free (check your spices) and super easy to make with any kind of potato.   We definitely only buy organic potatoes though.  I read years ago that potatoes are heavily doused in pesticides.  And they routinely show up on the EWG dirty dozen list.   I really like potatoes because they actually contain a lot of nutrients – potassium, fiber, calcium, vitamin C, iron, vitamin B6 and magnesium.   It’s crazy that a medium potato...

green beans tossed in vinaigrette with toasted walnuts and fried shallots

Fancy Green Beans | Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free

Fancy Green Beans Perfect for the holidays, these fancy green beans are dressed up with fried shallots, toasted walnuts and tossed in a simple red wine vinaigrette. This green bean dish is a healthy alternative to the traditional green bean casserole served during the holidays. Instead of using canned cream of mushroom soup and fried onions that aren’t gluten-free, we use healthier and leaner ingredients.   If you are looking for other gluten-free Thanksgiving recipes check out the perfect roasted turkey recipe and our awesome recipe for really good gluten-free stuffing. The nice thing about this dish, is that it is so quick and super easy. But you get lots of flavor and texture. Plus it is naturally gluten-free, dairy-free and casein-free. Make sure you...

Bacon Brussels Sprouts | Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free

Bacon Brussels Sprouts This Brussels sprouts recipe has turned into one of our favorite side dishes.  It goes wonderfully with a Thai turkey burger and roasted sweet potatoes.  Or serve it with fried chicken tenders! It is a combo of two recipes I found on Pinterest from The Fit Cook and Heather Christo, which were both delicious. This version evolved because it was the easiest for me to make with what I usually have in the pantry and fridge. All you need for this are bacon, Brussels, celery and a simple vinaigrette. I make more than I need of the vinaigrette for this recipe because it keeps nicely.  I can use it again or with a lunch salad or on a sandwich.  The flavors get better...
