Hi everyone!  How do the weeks go by so fast?  Already time for the weekly menu again!?

We are going to attempt to make gluten free sourdough oat English muffins this week.  So far the baking adventures with our sourdough starter have resulted in some pretty exciting breads.  The dinner rolls were wonderful.  The naan was amazing and we didn’t even have to try the thin and crispy pizza crust this time around because we could use the extra naan as a pizza crust.  So delicious.  Truly!

I also tried Halloumi cheese for the first time.  It is made from goat’s and sheep’s milk and resembles mozzarella except it is saltier and firmer.  You can even fry it!  Instead of making cheeseburger pizzas like we planned we switched to more of a margarita-style pizza with tomatoes, basil and the Halloumi cheese.  So yummy!  It was amazing on the naan we made.

So I finally am getting genetic testing done.

Brett and I have often joked that we might actually be distantly related because both of our Irish families descended from the same part of Ireland.  And there are a lot of similar Irish traits between us. Well we decided to do the 23 and me genetic testing.

Since I’m very interested in my health related genetics, we did both health and ancestry.  It should be interesting.  I’m curious to see how much information we actually get back.  So we’ve sent off the spit samples and now we wait the results.

Meanwhile, we are just trying to make it through the Texas heat.  Too many 100+ days here in Austin.  We even hit a record with 105.

Oh, by the way, speaking of excess heat – we did not like the BBQ & Wine fest at Spicewood Vineyards.  I don’t like waiting in long lines for food and especially not in 102 degree weather with no tents or shade.  The Spicewood Tempranillo wine was really nice but I won’t be doing that festival again.  Nope.

Tuesday – Sloppy Joes with Fried Zucchini

Wednesday – Roasted Chicken with Bionature Linguini, Pesto & Parmesan

Thursday – Eggs Benedict with Faux Hollandaise on Sourdough Oat English Muffins

Friday – Dinner Out

Saturday – Steaks with Faux Béarnaise, Roasted Sweet Potatoes & Asparagus

Sunday – Asian Chicken Salad (using the mixture for P.F Chang-y Lettuce Wraps)

Hi! I’m Deana. This food blog is all about cooking wholesome real food and developing gluten free recipes for some of our favorite comfort foods. I also create weekly menus to save time and money while reducing stress and food waste. I had to start eating gluten-free in 2010 and dairy/casein-free (except for the occasional Parmesan or goat cheese) in 2014. I’m kind of a science nerd, too. In the ’90s, I earned an undergrad degree in biochemistry from The University of Texas at Austin. Hook ’em! Then followed up with a PhD in biochemistry and a law degree from the University of Houston. I recently earned a certificate in genomics/sequence analysis from Johns Hopkins University, where I also took a very cool food microbiology course.
