The Weekly Menu Oct. 24 #glutenfree #menuplanning

Hi all!  Hope you are doing well. It’s already time for the weekly menu again!  We have a couple days off from cooking again this week.  Woohoo!  Last week we tried two more places offering gluten free food – Frank (artisan sausages served on a Udi’s bun with waffle fries from a dedicated fryer) and take out from Pho Thaison (Vietnamese Pho, starters, chef and house specials).  I’ll be adding them to my growing list of restaurants serving delicious gluten free food in Austin, Texas!

Next week we have two interesting events planned.  We are going to see the screening of Tower, a documentary highlighting the witnesses, heroes and survivors of the first American mass school shooting at The University of Texas in 1966.  It is playing at the Alamo Drafthouse, where they also serve gluten free food and adult beverages?.  Since I also have to keep it dairy/casein free, I usually just get one of the salads sans cheese.

And of course, the event I’ve been looking forward to since I discovered it’s existence last year – The Texas Monthly BBQ Festival!  The nice thing about BBQ is that it is usually gluten-free.  And delicious.  Spices, rubs and sauces might contain gluten or wheat so I’m going to have to ask the pit master before trying each bite.  But I’m also going to do some online research about each BBQ joint beforehand to find places I know should be safe like Freedmen’s, La Barbecue, Franklin BBQ, Black’s BBQ, etc.  A little preparation on my part never hurts.

So in between our fun events, we have to think about what’s for dinner.  As always it is going to be gluten free and dairy/casein free (except for the Parmesan cheese), mostly organic and nonGMO (to avoid glyphosate not the technology) and low fructose.  But this week is definitely going in the decadent category!

Hi! I'm Deana. This food blog is all about cooking wholesome real food and developing gluten free recipes for some of our favorite comfort foods. I also create weekly menus to save time and money while reducing stress and food waste. I had to start eating gluten-free in 2010 and dairy/casein-free (except for the occasional Parmesan or goat cheese) in 2014. I'm kind of a science nerd, too. In the '90s, I earned an undergrad degree in biochemistry from The University of Texas at Austin. Hook 'em! Then followed up with a PhD in biochemistry and a law degree from the University of Houston. I recently earned a certificate in genomics/sequence analysis from Johns Hopkins University, where I also took a very cool food microbiology course.
